Hardware Setup Guide – Star Micronics Printer

This document details hardware requirements for Star Micronics Printer.

Prerequisites

To set up your Star Micronics printer with your Windows PC, you need to ensure that you have all the required accessories.

There are multiple mC-Print3 models with different supported interfaces available in the market. We strongly recommend you check the model’s name of your printer. There are 2 methods of doing it.

The table below shows the types of interfaces supported by each mC-Print3 model.



The supported OS for each interface and communication may vary depending on the model. Please refer to the connection explanation for each interface.

Steps to configure and setup Star Micronics Printer on a Windows machine

The steps to configure and setup your Star Micronics Printer on a Windows machine are listed below:

Step 1.
Open your web browser and navigate to: http://www.starmicronics.com/support/Default.aspx



Step 2.
Select the Product Type as “StarPRNT for mCollection” from the drop-down list.



Step 3.
Select the installation package, as it includes the Drivers, Configuration Utility, OPOS and Help Manuals. (The first link in the image below) The installation package is downloaded as a .zip file.



Step 4.
Extract the downloaded .zip file. Right Click on the setup file and run as administrator to install the file.



Step 5.
Connect the Star Micronics printer to your Windows machine via USB-B port as shown in the image below.



Step 6.
Install the drivers for your Star Micronics printer. This is required specially if you are connecting your printer using an interface other than USB. You can make use of the “Windows Printer Queue Management” function to install drivers for an interface other than USB.



Microsoft Windows has a Plug and Play feature built in. This allows the operating system to detect and install the best supported driver for your printer hardware.

Step 7.
Once the Star Micronics printer driver is installed you can choose to setup your cash drawer (optional). On the Windows Printer Queue Management screen, select your printer model and click on Properties. Then click on the “Device Settings” tab. Expand “Peripheral Unit 1” to see your Cash Drawer.



We have seen the steps to configure Star Micronics Printer on a Windows machine. Now let us go through the steps to setup and configure your Star Micronics printer on a MAC machine.

Steps to configure and setup Star Micronics Printer on a MAC machine

The steps to configure and setup your Star Micronics Printer on a MAC machine is listed below:

Step 1.
Open your web browser and navigate to: http://www.starmicronics.com/support/Default.aspx



Step 2.
Select the Product Type as “CUPS Drivers” from the drop-down list.



Step 3.
Select the Printer Family as “CUPS_for_Mac” from the drop-down list.



Step 4.
Install the .pkg file downloaded.



Step 5.
Connect the Star Micronics printer to your Windows machine via USB-B port as shown in the image below.



Step 6.
Verify if the .pkg file is installed successfully. Navigate to System Preferences on your Mac machine and select Printers & Scanners. If the .pkg file is installed successfully, you should be able to see your Star Micronics printer listed there. You may click on the “+” sign if the Printer & Scanner list is not auto populated.



Step 7.
Once the Star Micronics printer driver is installed you can choose to setup your cash drawer (optional).
Open your Safari web browser. Type “localhost:631” in the address bar.



When accessing the CUPS screen for the first time, you might see the message “Web Interface is Disabled”. If this occurs, copy “cupsctl WebInterface=yes”. Otherwise, please proceed.



To fix this, you need to open the Terminal and paste “cupsctl WebInterface=yes” and press Enter.


Step 8.
Click Printers to bring up the Printer Queue.



Step 9.
Click on your Star Micronics printer. The name would reflect as “Star_MCP31_STR_001_”


Step 10.
Click on the “Administration” drop-down menu and select “Set Default Options”



Step 11.
Click on “Cash Drawer Control”. Then from the Cash Drawer dropdown menu select Open Drawer 1 and click on the button labelled Set Default Options.
