Promotions - Spend X and Save an Amount

Introduction

Tagrain allows retailers like you to define various types of promotions. These promotions are configured to automatically apply when a certain condition is met. Currently the application allows you to define the following promotion types:

Points To Consider

You can define Promotions in Tagrain only when you purchase and activate the Offers, Discounts and Pricing Management Plugin

This Spend X | Save an amount promotion is applicable at the document level and not at the line level.

The promotional discount is prorated across the lines based on the price of the product.

This Spend X | Save an amount promotion is not considered for promotion reordering. This implies that in case of multiple Spend X | Save an amount promotions, the order of hierarchy is based on the maximum spend mentioned across all the Spend X promotions

If you edit a scanned product on the transaction grid, for its price or discount, the promotion applied is removed.

In case of Spend X | Save an amount promotion the amount that is considered is without tax. This means that in the promotion Spend $1000 | Get 10% off the $1000 is without tax.

Steps to define Spend X and Save An Amount Promotions Type

Navigate to Home > Inventory > Promotion to open the Promotion List View Screen. All the existing Promotions are listed here on this screen. This screen is divided into sections - Current | Upcoming | Ended. Each section displays a list of promotions which can either be the current promotions or the upcoming promotions or the promotions that have ended, depending upon what section is selected. See: Promotion Screen Based Guide

Please Note: Mark the promotions as active if you want them to be applied on the Web Register.

The Product List View Screen allows you to:

  • Create a new Promotion

  • Edit an existing Promotion

  • Delete an existing Promotion

  • Copy an existing Promotion to create a new one

  • End a promotion earlier than its scheduled end date

You can also edit the promotion order by clicking the Reorder Promotions button.

Click the Add Promotion button to open the Create Promotion Screen. This screen is split into sections called accordions. These accordions change depending upon the value used in the Promotion Type drop-down. Use these accordions to manage all Promotions related settings.

To define Spend X | Save an amount Promotion, you need to fill in the Promotion Header followed by the Buy X and Get Y accordions. The mandatory fields are marked with an (*) asterisk mark. For a detailed explanation on each accordion and its fields, please refer to the Screen Based Guide on Promotions

All the promotions that you define follow an order. This order determines the sequence in which the promotion(s) are applied to the products selected in the transaction grid.

Promotion order is applicable when a product is covered in more than one promotion. In cases where an order is NOT specified, the promotion that was created earlier (based on the date/time stamp) takes precedence. However, in case of multiple Spend X | Save an amount Promotion,  the order of hierarchy is based on the maximum spend mentioned across all the Spend X promotions. (This is explained later in this article)

Spend X | Save an amount Promotion

In this article we are explaining Spend X | Save an amount Promotion:

Spend $1500 | Save 15%

Spend X and Save An Amount Promotion Header

Select Spend  X | Save an amount as your promotion in the Promotion Type drop-down.

Specify a description for the Spend  X | Save an amount Promotion. For Example, you can specify Spend $1500 | Save 15% as your description.

Use the calendar icon to specify a date range you want this promotion to run at your store(s). Don’t forget to toggle the Is Active switch to ON. This marks the promotion as active. Promotions which are inactive cannot be applied on the POS terminal.

You can apply this promotion to some or all your retail stores. Select the store name where you want this promotion to run.

Please Note: By default, a Promotion is applicable on all the stores

You can also specify the customer group on which this promotion would be applicable. However, this step is optional. Specifying promotion to a customer group ensures that the promotion is applied only to the customers who are part of the customer group.

There are 2 sides to this Spend  X | Save An Amount Promotion - the Buy Side and the Get Side. You need to configure these sides using the Buy X accordion and the Save an amount accordion respectively. These accordions are explained in the upcoming section.

The Buy Side Accordion

Let’s begin with the Buy Side.

By default, the switch All Products is set to OFF. This means that when you create a promotion, it would NOT be applicable on all your products.

Specify the Value as $1500 in the Value field. Your customer would qualify for this promotion when he spends $1500 or more as your promotion says Spend $1500 | Save 15%

Then in the Type drop-down select Product as the option.

By default, the switch Include is set to ON. This means that the product(s), the product group(s), the manufacturer(s) or the product tag(s) that you search, this promotion would be applicable on them all.

You need to manually search and select the product(s), the product group(s), the manufacturer(s) or the product tag(s) where this promotion would be applicable on the search bar.

Let’s assume that you want this promotion to apply on all the products. In this case you don’t have to manually search and select the product(s), the product group(s), the manufacturer(s) or the product tag(s) where this promotion would be applicable. Instead  you can mark the Include switch OFF and switch the All Products is set to ON

Once the selection is done, you still have the option to Not Include some of the product(s), the product group(s), the manufacturer(s) or the product tag(s) in the promotion. To exclude them, search them and mark their Include switch to OFF in the grid below.

Once configured, the Buy Side should look like this. (Screenshot Below)

The screenshot above depicts that you included all the products in this promotion, except the .

Now that the Buy Side has been configured, let us move to the Get Side.

The Get Side Accordion

Let’s begin with the Get Side.

In the Save an amount accordion, the Save field allows you to specify an amount or % that your customer would save on this promotion. You need to specify 15% as the Save percentage, as your promotion says Spend $1500 | Save 15%. The Get Side in this case should look like this. (Screenshot Below)

Now that we have configured the Buy Side and the Get Side, let us see how this promotion is applied on the Web Register.

Spend X and Save An Amount Promotion as on the Web Register Screen

A customer, John Luther, walks in one of your stores. He brought the following items:

1 Pink Polo T Shirt worth $699

1 Black Men’s Wallet worth $599

1 Orange Hat worth $499

The base price of the Pink Polo T Shirt was $699. However, when scanned at the POS it was costing $747.93.

The base price of the Black Men’s Wallet was $599. However, when scanned at the POS it was costing $640.93.

The base price of the Orange Hat was $499. However, when scanned at the POS it was costing $533.93.

This Spend $1500 and Save 15% promotion was applied on the Web Register when the 3rd product (Orange Hat) was scanned.

As a result, the Pink Polo T Shirt reduced from $747.93 to $635.74; the Black Men’s Wallet reduced from $640.93 to $544.79; the Orange Hat reduced from $533.93 to $453.84

The breakup is as under:

Base Price - Discount + Tax

699 - 15% discount (104.85) = 594.15 + 7% Tax (41.59) = 635.74

599 - 15% discount (89.85) = 509.15 + 7% Tax (35.64) = 544.79

499 - 15% discount (74.85) = 424.15 + 7% Tax (29.69) = 453.84

Total Amount Payable

635.74 + 544.79 + 453.84 = 1634.37

This Spend $1500 and Save 15% promotion is applied on the Web Register only when the bill total exceeds $1500.

In the above example, this Spend $1500 and Save 15% is applied the moment you scan the 3rd product (Orange Hat).

The Web Register Screen should look something like this. (Screenshot Below)

Important Points to Consider

If you offer an additional discount at the line level the applied promotion is removed. For example, if you offer an additional discount on Men’s Black Wallet, the 10% promotion discount is automatically removed.

However, If you offer a discount at the transaction level, there is no impact on the promotion applied.  For example, if you offer an additional discount of 15% on total sale, the 10% promotion discount on individual products stays intact.

Promotion Reordering (Multiple Promotion Schemes)

The application allows you to set the order in which the promotions are to be applied on the Web Register in cases where a product is covered in more than one promotion. This means that all the promotions that you define follow an order. It is this sequence the application would follow when applying for promotion. You can rearrange this order by dragging the promotions up or down in the Promotions List View Screen by clicking the Reorder Promotions button. However, if you fail to define this order, the promotion that was created first will get applied based on its creation time.

This Reorder Promotions rule is applicable to the following promotions:

Buy X | Get Y

Buy X | For a fixed price

Buy X | Save an amount

However, the Spend X | Save an amount Promotion is an exception to this rule.

Spend X | Save an amount Promotion is not considered when defining the ordering sequence of the promotions. This means that this Promotion will also not reflect on the Promotion Reorder screen. Let us try to explain this with an example.

You have created the following Promotions in Tagrain:

Spend $1000, Save 10%

Spend $2000, Save 20%

Spend $3000, Save 30%

As stated earlier, every promotion that you define in Tagrain follows an order with Spend X | Save an amount being the only exception. This means in cases where there are multiple Spend X | Save an amount Promotions defined in the application, the order of hierarchy will be based on the maximum spend mentioned across all the Spend X promotions.

The screenshot below shows the Promotion Reorder Screen. Please note that the Spend X | Save and amount Promotion will not reflect on this Promotion Reorder screen.
