Categorization of products based on their types is a great advantage offered by an online retail application. Tagrain allows you to define different types of products based on their nature and type. While creating a product you need to select the type from the “Product Type” dropdown list. The options in the dropdown list may vary depending upon the Tagrain Edition you are on and the Plugins you might have purchased. Mentioned below is a brief description of each type of product that can be created in Tagrain.
Most of the products are standard products which do not have variants (like size, color, etc.)
Serial controlled products are the ones that have a unique serial number attached to them. Most of the electronics products are serial controlled products. For example: a mobile phone, or a television. Whenever these products are received in the store, it is mandatory to allocate serial numbers to all the pieces that are being received. In addition to the serial number, you can also capture the date of manufacturing and the date when these serial numbers were received.
Note: It is mandatory to select a serial number every time a serial controlled product is sold at the Web Register.
Batch controlled products are those products which have a shelf life. Normally all perishable products are configured as batch-controlled products. Whenever these products are received in the store, it is mandatory to allocate a batch number. In addition to a batch number, you can also capture the expiry date (best by date / use before date), date of manufacturing and the date when this batch of product was received. You can either allocate one single batch to all the products received in the transaction OR you can allocate as many batches as per the information on the receipt document.
Note: It is mandatory to select a batch number every time a batch-controlled product is sold at the Web Register.
Composite Products are created by combining more than one product and are sold as one single unit. These products are not stocked, and the inventory of the products contained in them are reduced at the point of sale. For example, an evening dress composite could have an evening gown + a nice watch + a coat. Whenever this Composite Product is sold at the Web Register, the stock of the gown, the watch and the coat are reduced by one each.
Variant products are the ones that have attributes like color, size, style, weave, etc. Variant products have a parent product, and the combination of attributes creates a set of child products. It is the child product that is sold on the Web Register. For example, Polo T Shirt / Large / Blue is a product that has 2 attributes – Size and color. These 2 attributes have their values. Possible values of Size attribute could be Small, Medium, Large. Similarly, the color attribute could be Red, Blue, Green, etc.
Though a type of a product, Gift Cards are created through the Gift Card menu. Gift Cards are non-stock items and are used during the sales (or refund) process as a payment type.
